Chocks Away

"The Gannet is the largest European seabird, It dives from up to 30 metres plunging deep under water, turning to attack fish near the surface.Evolution has designed the Gannet well for this violent activity. It has no external nostrils, no real tongue, and has an intricate pneumatic system of air-cushion shock absorbers throughout its body. The fishermen tell me that this high impact diving eventually causes blindness and an inevitable sad end. It is almost always in the air resting on the water only briefly after feeding. It breeds on inaccessible cliffs or rocky islands.Otherwise it is only seen well out to sea. I spend much time on fishing boats off shore on the South West coast of Ireland in order to get nearer to the sealife. It is quite a challenge as nothing is ever still. "
