DEAD GANNET

Deep Cut.jpg - I took this shot from Inishtrahull Island which is 7 miles off the northern coast of Ireland. I was amazed when I downloaded the image to discover the deep gash one Grey Seal has sustained from fishing gut. It looks like a seriously deep injury but I imagine it happened some time previously as there was no bleeding and the edge of the wound shows some sign of healing. When I observed the seals beforehand they were not distressed in any way. Perhaps the wound will heal over the embedded gut and the young seal will survive in spite of her injury caused by the activities of man.

GUTTED

Kingfisher.jpg - Ireland is addressing its rubbish disposal problem and one does see fewer bags strewn into the ditches. This scene I found dismaying for the barbed wire was erected on wetlands where no stock could graze and the fence had no purpose either to keep stock in or out. It is an otherwise beautiful unspoilt scene near Timoleague in West Cork in Ireland.
